Eleanor Bahanovich

Eleanor Bahanovich, 88, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2026, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. She was born on September 21, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, to Charles and Maria Bucacink. To know Eleanor was to know a woman who loved her family deeply and quietly devoted her life to them. She was a loving mother whose strength, faith, and sacrifices were woven into the everyday lives of the people she loved most. Eleanor graduated from Denby High School and devoted 35 years of her working life to the Bell System, where she held many different positions. Throughout her life, she called several places home, including upstate New York, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Florida, where she lived on two occasions. Wherever she lived, she made a home for her family and carried with her the traditions, faith, and love that remained at the heart of her life. She ultimately made her final home in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. After a long day at work, Eleanor would often come home and cook dinner for her family. Those ordinary evenings became some of the most meaningful memories the meals she prepared, the care she put into them, and the simple comfort of having her family together. She gave of herself without asking for recognition, and her love was often found in the things she did for others every single day. She was proud of her family and the life she worked so hard to build. In her younger years, Eleanor loved cooking and baking, especially experimenting with new recipes. She enjoyed the holidays and the traditions that came with them, finding happiness in the warmth and togetherness they brought. Eleanor also treasured her Romanian and Ukrainian heritage. She enjoyed attending annual cultural festivals that celebrated these traditions, especially the opportunity to enjoy traditional foods and beverages and share in the music, customs, and fellowship of her heritage. These celebrations gave her a special connection to the culture and traditions that were an important part of who she was. She also loved listening to Anne Murray and Bobby Vinton simple pleasures that became part of the soundtrack of her life. Above all, Eleanor was a woman of faith. Her Orthodox Christian faith was not simply something she practiced; it was a source of strength and a guiding part of who she was. She faithfully prayed each day for her family and was grateful for every blessing the Lord had bestowed upon her. Her family knew that they were carried in her prayers and held close in her heart. Eleanor’s greatest joy was her family. She will be deeply missed by her children, Mark and his significant other, Kathy, and Andrew and his wife, Elissa; her cherished granddaughter, Izabella, who held a very special place in her heart; and her beloved grand dogs, Augustus “Auggie” and Lexie. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews, all of whom were part of the family she treasured so dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Maria Bucacink; her siblings, Charles, Vera, and Dan; and her beloved daughter-in-law, Debra. Eleanor’s life was not defined by grand gestures, but by a lifetime of love given in countless ways. It was in the dinner waiting after a long day of work, the recipes she tried, the holidays she enjoyed, the traditions she cherished, the festivals that connected her to her heritage, the music she listened to, and the prayers she offered for the people she loved. She taught those around her the meaning of perseverance, faith, and devotion not through words alone, but through the way she lived her life. Her family will miss her presence, her prayers, and the comfort of knowing she was always there. They will miss the woman who worked hard, loved deeply, worried faithfully, and gave so much of herself to the people she loved. But they will carry her with them in family traditions, in memories around the dinner table, in the recipes she left behind, in the heritage she treasured, and most of all, in the love she gave them. Eleanor’s greatest gift was her love, and that gift will remain with her family forever. The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 21800 Marter Road, St. Clair Shores, Michigan. The funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered in Eleanor’s memory to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church or St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, Attn: Building Fund, 5108 Kuykendall Road, Charlotte, NC 28270.
