Elizabeth Grzelak

Elizabeth “Betsy” Grzelak passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29, 2025, surrounded by the love of her three children. She was born on September 5, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, Betsy was the daughter of Louis and Mary (Poston) Penick. She graduated from Pershing High School and was employed by Associates, Inc., where she worked until marrying the love of her life, Wallace “Wally” Grzelak, in August of 1965. Together, Betsy and Wally built a loving home on the east side of Detroit, raising their three children – Lisa, Paula, and Joseph. Deeply committed to their community, the family was active in St. Raymond Parish, where Betsy found great joy and purpose. Over the years, she served in many roles, including lunch mom, Eucharistic Minister, chair of the annual Apple Harvest Festival, and numerous other positions that supported both the parish and the school. Betsy had an unrivaled passion for helping others. Whether through her volunteer work or daily acts of kindness, she exemplified compassion, service, and a generous spirit. One of Betsy’s greatest joys in life was being a grandmother. She adored her four grandchildren – Erin, Shannon, Ryan, and Alex – and cherished every moment spent together. Betsy was predeceased by her beloved husband Wally Grzelak, and her brother George Penick. She is survived by her three children: Lisa Grzelak, Paula Kane (Timothy), Joseph Grzelak (Stacy); her grandchildren Erin Kane, Shannon Kane, Ryan Grzelak, Alex Grzelak; her sister-in-law Cheryl Penick; her niece Michelle Johnston, and her nephew Todd Penick many many friends. Betsy’s kindness, warmth, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her. Visitation for Betsy will be held on Saturday, June 7th from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Wasik Funeral Home, Inc., 11470 Thirteen Mile Road (west of Hoover) Warren. Betsy's funeral will be held on Monday, June 9th beginning with an in state at 10 a.m. until time of Funeral Mass 10:30 a.m. at St. Raymond-Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 20103 Joann (south of 8 Mile & west of Schoenherr) Detroit. She will be buried with her husband in Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township.
