Daniel J. Skowronek

Daniel Joseph Skowronek of Saint Clair Shores passed away on March 30, 2026 surrounded by his loving family at the age of 99, just two months short of his 100th birthday. He was born May 31,1926 in Alpena, Michigan to Andrew and Anna Skowronek. At 16 years of age, Daniel went to work on the Great Lakes freighters. Two years later, he joined the United States Navy seeing combat during WWII in the Battle for Okinawa. Daniel was very proud of his Navy service. Returning from the war, he and his brother Joe built and opened a restaurant in Alpena called the “Great Lakes Drive-In.” It was during that time he met the love of his life, Lucy, when she applied for a job as a waitress. They married October 28,1950 and built their life together in the Detroit area over the next 58 years. Daniel was a Plasterer by trade and worked well into his 70’s, and he could be found doing some plaster work for his kids and grandkids in his 80’s. He really enjoyed fishing and eating the fresh perch he caught. His faith in God was strong. He had a special spiritual relationship with St. Joseph, a fellow tradesperson. Daniel volunteered as an Usher at his church for many years and held fund raising events for the St. Vincent de Paul Society helping to send young boys and girls to summer camp. He led other church goers in the daily Rosary after Mass. When he could no longer attend daily Mass, he watched it on TV. He said the Rosary and read from his prayer book many times during the day. Above all his achievements, Daniel’s greatest pride was his family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Lucy and son Kenneth. He is the loving father of Bonnie (Richard) Wojewoda, Robert (Karen) Skowronek, Ruth (Mark) Schimmel, Marie (Dennis) Norrod, and Daniel (Jennifer) Skowronek. Dearest grandfather to Katherine (Mitch), Elizabeth (Jeff), Christine (Jesse), Jacquelyn (Edward), James, Steven, Paul, Abigail, Susanna, David, Michael (Shima), Lindsay (Stephen), and Gregory (Amanda). Great grandfather to Cayden, Bryce, Avery, Eleanor, Marilyn, Rory, Reid, Ryan, Elliot, Palmer, and Conrad. Daniel is survived by his brother Andrew (Charlotte) Skowronek. He was also predeceased by his parents, brothers Joseph, Aloysius, Florian, Justin and his sister Lucille. Daniel will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered for his kindness, unwavering support to all, his smiling face, love of pinochle, bags of M&Ms for his great grandkids, Dziadzia cookies and saying, “Ja cie kocham.” Visitation Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 3-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Rosary at the Wasik Funeral Home, Inc., 11470 Thirteen Mile Road (West of Hoover) Warren. Instate Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 9:30 a.m. until a 10 a.m. funeral mass at Our Lady of Hope Parish, 28301 Little Mack Avenue (SW corner at Martin Road) St. Clair Shores. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes can be made to the Solanus Casey Center in Detroit (www.solanuscasey.org) or to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (www.svdpdetroit.org).
