Dr. Albert J Ceravolo MD

Albert J. Ceravolo M.D. Longtime City of Grosse Pointe resident Albert J. Ceravolo M.D., 99, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, at his home in Grosse Pointe. Dr. Ceravolo was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Aliquippa, Pa., to Joseph and Mary Ceravolo. He was the beloved husband of Norma Ceravolo for more than 74 years. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, James “Jimmy” Ceravolo. Albert earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1943 and was a member of the Alpha Phi Delta fraternity. He then attended the University of St. Louis Medical School, graduating in 1945. On June 16, 1945, two days after medical school graduation, he married Norma Ann Sciortino, whom he referred to as the best thing that ever happened to him. Dr. Ceravolo completed his internship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Medical Center in 1946. From there, he and his family moved to Grosse Pointe in 1953 where he obtained his specialty in anesthesia. He spent the remainder of his professional practice as an anesthesiologist at Bon Secours Hospital (now Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe), where many of his children and grandchildren were born. Dr. Ceravolo cofounded Circolo de Medici, an organization that brought together physicians of Italian heritage. In addition, he was a devoted member of the Grosse Pointe Rotary Club, serving more than 50 years. He became club president in 1976 and was awarded the club’s highest award for a lifetime of rotary service above self, the Infinite Sky award, in 2011. He also was honored and recognized by the club for 50 years of perfect attendance. Dr. Ceravolo will be missed by his wife, Norma, and children, Elaine Stein (Don), A.J. Ceravolo, Nancy Ceravolo (Bruce Updyke), MaryAnn Ceravolo, Fran Gough (Bob) and Rosanne Ellison (Hank). He was adored by his nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who called him Papa. He also is survived by his brother, Francis J. Ceravolo D.D.S.; as well as many loving cousins, friends and neighbors. A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 28, at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, 157 Lakeshore, Grosse Pointe Farms. Visitation begins at 11:30 a.m. at the church.
